Our mother of sorrows
Book: Favorite Catholic Novenas for All Occasions, Regina Press
Meditation: This novena was created by the Order of the Servants of Mary. Founded in 1233 in Florence Italy, while many devotions to the blessed mother emphasize her radiant glory as the mother of God it is useful and again to reflect upon the intense sorrow she suffered, while watching Jesus’s suffering and death on the cross when we insecure, terrible and heartbreaking loss, this novena can bring perspective and relief.
Novena: Say this prayer once a day for nine consecutive days.
Most holy and afflicted, virgin Mother of Sorrows and Queen of Martyrs you stood motionless at the foot of the cross be beneath you’re dying sun through the sword of grief, which pierced you then through the unceasing suffering of your life of sorrow and the bliss, which now fully repay you for your past trials and afflictions look upon me with a mother‘s tenderness and have pity on me as I pray before you to venerate your sorrows and place my request with child-like confidence in the sanctuary of your wounded heart.
I beg of you to present to Jesus Christ in union with the infinite merits of his passion and death you’re suffering as the foot of the cross, and through the power of both to grant my request “silently mention your attention here” to whom shall I turn in my needs and misery if not to you, mother of mercy, you drink so deeply of the chalice of your son that you can sympathize with the suffering of those who are still in the valley of tears.
Offer to our divine savior the suffering he bore on the cross that the memory of them may draw his mercy upon me a sinner refuge of sinners, and Hope of all mankind, except my petition, and granted, if it would be, according to the will of God, Lord Jesus Christ, I offer you the merits of Mary, Your Mother and ours, as she stood beneath the cross in order that by her loving intercession, I may obtain the happy fruits of your Passion and Death.
